11 May 2016: Thailand Ministry of Public Health Visits NHG Research And Development Office

 

On 11 May 2016, the NHG Research and Development Office (RDO) hosted a group of 21 delegates from the Thailand Ministry of Public Health.  The Thai Delegation was led by Dr Suphan Srithamma, Director-General, Department of Medical Services, and received by  A/Prof Lim Tock Han, Deputy Group CEO (Education & Research) led the NHG group.


NHG is privileged to have Dr Suphan Srithamma, Director-General, Department of Medical Services, who shared with us on the overview of Thailand’s Health Systems, and Dr Wayupa Wongwikrom, Chief of Ethics Group, Institute of Medical Research and Technology Assessment, to share with the group on Thailand’s Ethics Framework.


The teams shared on views about research governance structures, and how to improve processes and tackle issues related to clinical research. In addition, the teams discussed about the NHG’s AAHRPP-accredited human research protection programme, research training and quality management.

20 July 2013: Public Forum

The NHG Office of Human Research Protection Programme (OHRPP) organised a Public Forum to educate the community about research. This event was held at the School of the Arts (SOTA) Drama Theatre, and focused on the essentials of research, with the theme of: Research and You – What You Need to Know about Participating in Research.
 
The Public Forum invited four experienced research ethics experts and subject advocates to share with the public honest and accurate information on how to make an informed decision before engaging in research activities.
 
The invited speakers comprised of:

  • A/Prof Chin Jing Jih, Chairperson of the NHG Research Ethics Committee, Senior Consultant, Department of Geriatric Medicine, Tan Tock Seng Hospital who gave an overview of research and the role and rights of research volunteers.
  • Dr Lee Soo Chin, Chairperson of NHG Domain Specific Review Board B1 and Senior Consultant, Department of Haematology-Oncology, National University Hospital who shared on the informed consent process and what questions a potential research volunteer should ask before consenting to participate in any research.
  • Ms Cynthia Chan, Senior Manager, Department of Legal Services, Tan Tock Seng Hospital who provided forum participants insights on a subject’s legal rights, and how personal particulars and data are being protected in clinical research.
  • Dr Yong Wei Peng, Chairperson of NHG Domain Specific Review Board C and Senior Consultant, Department of Haematology-Oncology, National University Hospital who shared how the research scene has evolved, and how society has benefited from research that has been carried out.

8 Nov 2008: NHG Annual Scientific Public Forum

NHG RDO held its 2nd Public Forum on "Participation in Clinical Research" during the Annual Scientific Congress in Nov 2008. This 2nd forum focuses on what potential research participants need to know about research and their rights.

26 July 2008: Public Forum

NHG Research & Development Office organised its 1st Public Forum on Clinical Research at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where patients and public alike learnt about clinical research, and what participants should look out for before participating in a clinical trial.

Dr Goh Boon Cher (Senior Consultant, Haematology-Oncology, National University Hospital), an active researcher and a committed research ethics member, and Dr Allan Harkness (Dean of the Asia Graduate School of Theology) a member of three Singapore medical/research ethics committees in Singapore spoke at the Forum, to create greater awareness and understanding of clinical research, to empower the public with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions about participating in clinical trials.
