Translating Research into Highest Quality Patient Care

Rehabilitative Regenerative Medicine

5 February 2015

Rehabilitative Medicine focuses on the enhancement and restoration of functional ability so as to improve the quality of life to patients with physical impairments or disabilities. For Regenerative Medicine it focuses on the replacement or regeneration of human cells, tissues or organs, to restore or to establish normal function.

In this seminar, we have invited three speakers to share on their work on Rehabilitative and/or Regenerative Medicine. The three speakers were Dr Chan Kay Fei (Senior Consultant, Rehabilitation Medicine, Tan Tock Seng Hospital), A/Prof Chew Sing Yian (Associate Professor, School of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University) and Mr Wee Seng Kwee (Principal Physiotherapist, Rehabilitation Medicine, Tan Tock Seng Hospital).

In Dr Chan’s presentation, “Regenerative Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine - New Partnerships for Improving Physical Function”, he provided the audience with an insight on the development of rehabilitation medicine in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Chan also highlighted some challenges and opportunities in the field of Regenerative Medicine and how it could be could be incorporated with Rehabilitation Medicine to result in better treatment outcomes for patients.

A/Prof Chew from LKCMedicine gave an interesting presentation on how synthetic materials could be used to mimic biological materials in assisting the repairing of tissues or organs that are damaged. Her presentation was titled “Bio-mimicking Nanofiber Scaffolds: The Roles of Fiber Topography and Biochemical Signalling in Regenerative Medicine”.

Mr Wee rounded up the seminar with his presentation titled “Regenerative Rehabilitation: Forging New Frontiers in Patients’ Recovery”. He highlighted some of the breakthroughs in the field of regenerative medicine and also shared on how Rehabilitation Medicine and Regenerative Medicine could work hand-in-hand to ensure the best therapy outcome for patients.
