Translating Research into Highest Quality Patient Care

Advanced Vision and Technology Alliance (AVATA)

The Advanced Vision and Technology Alliance (AVATA) is a joint innovation lab which was established between A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) and the National Healthcare Group (NHG) on 11th October 2013.

This unique cross-collaboration between clinicians from NHG Eye Institute and scientists and engineers from ASTAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) is focused on vision-related technology in three main areas: visual acuity assessment, augmented reality laser surgery and eye disease detection.

One of the first projects to be completed was in the area of augmented reality laser surgery. The Augmented Reality Technological Eye surgery platform through Multi-modality Image and robot guided System (ARTEMIS) project was successfully completed in Aug 2015. The prototype developed in this project led to the filing of a technology disclosure and also won a best paper award at the 11th Asian Conference on Computer Aided Surgery 2015.

We are in the midst of translating this initial success one step closer to implementation in the clinical setting by moving into the next phase of its development to establish its proof of value.
